Short-form video ideas for small businesses

Most small businesses do not run out of products. They run out of ideas for how to show them. Here are formats that work for almost any business and can be filmed in one visit.

Ten ideas you can film this week

  • A day in the life of the business
  • Meet the owner: why you started
  • How it is made, from start to finish
  • The most asked customer question, answered in 20 seconds
  • A customer story, with permission
  • A mistake people make and how to avoid it
  • Behind the scenes of an order
  • Before and after
  • A tour of your space
  • What is new this month

Start with a hook

The first line decides whether someone keeps watching. Say the interesting thing first. For example: instead of "Hi, we are a bakery", start with "This is what 5 am looks like at a bakery."

Plan a month in one hour

Pick three themes, write four ideas for each, and film in batches. A batch of videos filmed on one day can be posted over weeks. That is how small teams stay consistent.

When to get help

If you want to keep running your business and still post steadily, a creator can plan, film and edit the videos for you. That is the work I do for brands in Los Angeles.

Questions brands ask

How long should a short video be?

As long as it needs to be to make its point. Most work well between 15 and 45 seconds.

How often should I post?

A steady rhythm you can keep up beats a burst you cannot. Start with a few times a week.
